The task of creating meaningful Corporate Social Responsibility
(CSR) programs is wrought with challenge, and many companies fall
short.
For example, some companies loudly tout their socially responsible
actions while simultaneously being publicly chastised for their blatant greed. Other
companies implement CSR policies that mystify stakeholders because they lack any organic
connection to their core business. Still others implement policies that promise to empower
stakeholders, but that actually leave them feeling impotent.
Navigating these potential pitfalls requires deep and rigorous corporate
introspection. It requires a process of self-examination in which the corporation
challenges itself to answer the following questions: What are our core social values?
Which ones derive from our deepest business purpose? Which resonate most with our
stakeholders? How can we embody those social values in CSR policies that engage,
educate, inspire and involve our stakeholders? How then might we lead others by
becoming a true champion of those values?
